Micro Wedding & Elopement FAQ Adelaide, South Australia

Micro Wedding & Elopement FAQ Adelaide, South Australia

“Small weddings bring the biggest moments.”

Planning an elopement or micro wedding in Adelaide usually comes with a few questions. This page covers the things couples ask us most often, from legal requirements and witnesses to photography, locations, weather backup plans, and how a relaxed small wedding actually works.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the TOP 12 questions we are asked:

What is an elopement wedding?

An elopement is a small, intimate wedding focused on the couple rather than a large event.
Many couples choose to elope because they want a meaningful ceremony without the pressure, cost or stress of a traditional wedding.

Elopements often include just the couple and two witnesses, or sometimes a small group of close family and friends.

What is a micro wedding?

A micro wedding is similar to an elopement but usually includes a small guest list, typically between 10 and 30 guests.

Micro weddings still include many traditional elements like vows, photography and a celebration afterwards, just on a smaller scale.

What is a Legals Only wedding?

A Legals Only wedding is the simplest way to get legally married.

It includes:

• the legal paperwork
• a registered marriage celebrant
• two witnesses
• a very short legal ceremony

These ceremonies usually take around 5 minutes and are perfect for couples who want to handle the legal side of marriage simply.

Many couples choose to do Legals Only first and celebrate later.

Do we need witnesses to get married?

Yes.

Australian marriage law requires two witnesses over the age of 18 to be present at your ceremony.

If you are eloping and do not have witnesses with you, we can often help organise them.

Did you know your photographer can be a witness?

How far in advance do we need to book?

To legally marry in Australia, you must lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least one month before your wedding date.

Some couples book their elopement months in advance, while others plan something simple once the legal paperwork has been lodged.

How do you legally get married in Australia?

To marry in Australia you must complete a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least one month before your wedding date.
Your ceremony must be conducted by a registered marriage celebrant and include two witnesses.

What happens if the weather is bad for an outdoor ceremony?

South Australian weather can be unpredictable, so we always plan a simple backup option for outdoor ceremonies. This might be nearby shelter, accommodation, a café, a B&B, or another undercover location close to your ceremony spot.

One of the advantages of an elopement or small wedding is flexibility. Because there are fewer people involved, it’s much easier to adjust plans compared to a large traditional wedding. There are fewer guests to notify, locations are easier to change, and sometimes we can simply shift the ceremony time slightly if the weather is expected to pass.

Many couples choose accommodation such as a B&B, Airbnb, or boutique hotel, which can be perfect as a relaxed indoor backup option. Some ceremony locations and venues also have undercover areas available if needed.

Another option is to move the ceremony to the place where you already plan to celebrate afterwards. If you’ve booked a restaurant, winery lunch, or private dinner, we can often hold the ceremony there instead.

The key thing to remember is that small weddings allow for flexibility, and with a little creativity we can almost always find a beautiful solution on the day.

How long does an elopement ceremony take?

A Legals Only ceremony usually takes around five minutes, while a personalised elopement ceremony generally takes 10–15 minutes.

After the ceremony most couples spend some time taking relaxed photos together.

Can family or friends attend an elopement?

Yes. While many elopements include just the couple and witnesses, others include a small group of close friends or family members.

Elopements are flexible and can be as simple or personal as you like.

Do we have to get married at the registry office?

No. Many couples prefer to marry somewhere more meaningful such as a garden, beach, vineyard or scenic location.

Adelaide offers many beautiful places where couples can have a relaxed ceremony and photos at the same time.

How much does it cost to elope in Adelaide?

The cost of an elopement can vary depending on the location, photography and ceremony style.
Many couples choose elopements because they are more affordable and focused on what really matters.

Simple Legals Only weddings are usually the most affordable option, while elopement or micro wedding packages may include photography and additional time.

How many photos will we receive from our wedding?

The number of photos depends on the length of photography coverage and the type of ceremony.

As a general guide, couples usually receive around 50-80 photos per hour of coverage, and sometimes more depending on the flow of the day and the moments captured.

For most elopements and micro weddings, this results in a curated gallery of beautiful edited images capturing the ceremony, portraits and relaxed moments afterwards.

Every wedding is different, but the goal is always the same — to capture the story of your day in a natural and meaningful way.
