Choose your own meaning
Some couples use a red thread to represent the connection between them. You can explain that meaning in a short reading or a few words from your celebrant.
If the ritual connects with a cultural or family tradition, ask someone familiar with that tradition to help you describe it accurately. Avoid assuming that one version represents every community.
Keep the ceremony practical
Decide who brings and holds the string, whether it is tied or simply held, and where it fits in the ceremony. Practise the movements with your celebrant so neither of you is left wondering what to do.
Keep it comfortable and easy to release. Ask how it will work alongside microphones, rings or anything else you are holding.
Include it alongside the legal requirements
A symbolic ritual is a personal addition to the ceremony. Your celebrant still guides you through the required legal words and signing.
