Decide what matters to you
Start with the feeling you want: quiet and personal, relaxed with a few laughs, or a small celebration shared with your closest people. Think about who you want beside you and the parts of your story you are happy to share.
You can include an entrance, music, readings, personal vows and a ring exchange. Choose the parts you enjoy and discuss them with your celebrant.
Plan the ceremony together
Your celebrant can suggest an order and help the words sound like you. Talk through names and pronunciations, how you want to be introduced, and anything you would prefer to keep private.
If someone is giving a reading, ask them early and send the final version to your celebrant. Keep a printed copy available on the day.
Include your people
A friend can read a passage, a family member can bring the rings, and children can take part in a way that suits their age and confidence. Give everyone a clear, simple role.
Think about seating, shade, hearing and access. A small guest list still deserves a comfortable place to gather.
Choose your vows and music
Personal vows work best when they sound like something you would actually say. Agree on an approximate length with your partner and practise speaking them slowly. Use our vow-writing guide for a starting point.
Check who will play your music, which device they will use and whether power or a speaker is needed. Have the tracks ready before the ceremony.
Make the legal arrangements
Your authorised celebrant guides you through the legal requirements. Give them your Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month and no more than 18 months before the ceremony. A shorter notice period needs approval; speak with your celebrant before making short-notice plans.
Australian Government marriage requirements
The couple, celebrant and two adult witnesses must be physically present. Your celebrant must also meet separately and in person with each of you before solemnising the marriage.
Check the practical plan
Confirm the ceremony position, arrival time, signing table, rings, documents and weather alternative. Share the timetable with your celebrant, photographer and venue contact so everyone knows what happens next.
