When to give notice
Give the completed Notice of Intended Marriage to an authorised celebrant at least one month and no more than 18 months before your wedding. If you have less time, speak with the celebrant before booking; a shortening of time needs approval.
Have the documents ready
Your celebrant checks evidence of birth and identity and, where relevant, the end of a previous marriage. Ask what they need for your circumstances and how to provide it securely.
Discuss missing documents, translations or overseas arrangements early so there is time to resolve them.
Arrange the required meetings
The notice can be witnessed in person or by audio-visual link where the requirements are met. Your celebrant must separately meet each of you in person before solemnising the marriage.
The couple, celebrant and two adult witnesses must be physically present for the ceremony.
